The Italian Writer and the Community: from Leopardi to Saviano
The theme of the nation as seen by some Italian writers

The lecture will focus on the dramatic and sometimes melancholic theme of the nation as seen in the works of some Italian modern and contemporary writers such as Giacomo Leopardi, Pier Paolo Pasolini, Antonio Moresco and Roberto Saviano. Benedetti argues that in their works these writers depict their conflict with the Italian community, perceived as ethically deficient and painfully different from other Western modern nations.

Carla Benedetti is Professor of Italian Modern and Contemporary Literature at the University of Pisa, and currently visiting professor of Theory of Literature at the University of Chicago. Her books include Pasolini contro Calvino (Bollati Boringhieri, 1998), The Empty Cage. Inquiry into the Mysterious Disappearance of the Author (Cornell University Press, 2005, the English translation of L’ombra lunga dell’autore, Feltrinelli, 1999), Il tradimento dei critici (Bollati Boringhieri, 2002) and La visione. Una conversazione con Antonio Moresco (Scheiwiller, 2009).

She is also columnist of the Italian magazine L’Espresso and co-director of the review Il primo amore (www.ilprimoamore.com). This latter review was founded in 2006 by a group of writers (among whom Antonio Moresco, Tiziano Scarpa, Dario Voltolini), by photographer Giovanni Giovannetti and by Carla Benedetti herself. The title of this review is taken from Diario del primo amore [Diary of my first love] by Giacomo Leopardi and each issue is dedicated to a special theme which is analyzed also by means of images, including photographs. Some of these images will also be shown during the lecture.

The event will be presented in Italian and in English.
Professor Tom Simpson (Distinguished Senior Lecturer in Italian at Northwestern University) will act as moderator.
